As I See It: Second look at Arizona’s haunted hotels

The Southwest is home to strange tales, including a number about Arizona’s phantasmal hotels. A phantasm is, by definition, a delusive appearance, a ghost or specter, and is somehow related to phantasmagoria, which as far as I know could be some kind of communicable disease.

I’ve lately been inquisitive about the possibility of there being more to the stories of the hauntings at some of our state’s older hotels, and I decided to look into it as a possibility for my Green Valley News column. I entered into this venture totally unbiased, understanding that just about anything having to do with the supernatural is possible.

Ghostly appearances have been seen at the El Tovar Hotel at Grand Canyon Village, constructed only 20 feet from the edge of the Grand Canyon's south rim. Build by the Fred Harvey Company in 1905, there are rumors that Fred Harvey himself haunts the third floor during the holiday season, inviting guests to the annual Christmas gathering.
