Haunting, 4-star 'Demon' more than a ghost story

The story of a groom possessed on his wedding day is both a creepy ghost story and a metaphor for a Europe still haunted by World War II.

kind of possessive spirit that refuses to stay buried. There are echoes of other films, particularly “Melancholia” and “The Shining,” but “Demon” stands as on its own just fine.

Oh, and it’s pretty funny, too.

Piotr moves from his home in London to a broken-down farmhouse to marry Zaneta (Agnieszka Zulewska), a local woman. Her father (Andrzej Grabowski), a successful landowner, has given them the house and the property. The entire region seems to be invited to the wedding, which will take place on the grounds, with rivers of booze and hours of dancing and carousing.
