Greeley ghost stories: Weld County Courthouse offers spooky tales

Connie Koppes was talking to a man behind the counter on the third floor of the Weld County Courthouse, and a voice came from the wall.

The man behind the counter heard it, too. Neither of them could remember what the voice said, but they agreed it sounded like a woman’s voice, and they both knew the voice said a full sentence. It wasn’t threatening, but neither could explain it.

That same day, Koppes heard a huge sigh in the room.

“I thought it was someone waiting for service who was trying to get my attention,” Koppes said. “But no one was there.”

Koppes loves Halloween. Little orange pumpkins sprawl out on her desk as a large plastic spider peeps out between them. Painted on Koppes’s nails are tiny white ghosts — some with googly eyes — against a black backdrop. Koppes has fun with the ghost stories surrounding the courthouse.
